The city of New Rome faces a duel between Caesar Catiline, a brilliant artist who advocates a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklin Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose devotion is divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part because of his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after a 30-hour shoot for the second episode and a table read with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco and Kevin Spacey. but the project was shelved after the September 11 attacks, as a scene from the script (p. 166) “predicted”; attacks. Coppola completely abandoned the project in 2007 and did not begin its development until 2019. The surveillance video of Cicero entering Caesar’s office is believed to have been shot by two different cameras, as indicated by the small text in the upper left corner. These are the same frames, inverted and slightly tilted. Cinematography, of course, was a spectacle. However, the special effects either greatly complemented the footage, or it was uncomfortable to look at them. I really liked the dreamy aesthetic of the film, but the dialogue was either cartoonishly difficult to understand or seemed to serve no purpose to the plot/characters. My favorite part of the movie was definitely the “Virgin’s Vow” episode. It also didn’t affect the plot in any way, but the song was actually good and the visual presentation was pleasing to the eye. Overall, this movie is definitely not for most people. I’m ashamed that I liked it. This is a terrible movie that I liked because of the strange game that made me laugh.
