Author Gary Dauberman told Den of Geek in June 2019 that his goal with the new version of Salem’s Lot is to put fear back into vampires, moving away from the more attractive, romanticized undead that have populated pop culture for the past quarter century, thanks to everything from Interview with the Vampire to Twilight to The Vampire Diaries. The film, like the book, is set in the late 1970s. Mark’s nightlight is a Batman nightlight with a logo from the 1989 Batman year. Correction: The story is set in 1975. The style of Mark’s Batman light is similar to that of 1989, but Batman toys from 1974 show the same style was used in 1975. References: Trog (1970). Sundown. I liked the look of the vampires. There was definitely a good, creepy atmosphere. Good action scenes. It had the makings of a good horror film, I just think it would have worked better as a miniseries. We needed more time to get to know these characters better. More time to build these relationships. I think Lewis does a really good acting job with what he’s given, but his character needs more development. His backstory doesn’t play into the story in any way other than in a vague “only the underdogs win” kind of way. I thought that him being a writer would serve a purpose (aside from being the obvious Stephen King replacement), like maybe he’s the one doing the research, but nope. The only other thing we know about him is that his parents died when he was a kid, and that serves no purpose either. He’s kind of a nothing character. At least Lewis does a good job with what little he’s given. But like I said, I think a miniseries would have been better to give the characters more time.
