AniMat’s insane animated feature The Cast: Stupid Old Death Bear (2022)
Synopsis
Four kids on their home planet make a mysterious discovery that lands them lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Jude Law in Skeleton Crew; and more stars from a galaxy far, far away. The holographic circus that entertains the young Neal siblings is the same Chewbacca family watch from the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special (1978).
I mean, after the disappointment of the sequel trilogy and most of the time
Like most 80s kids, I have fond memories of The Goonies, but I’d be lying if I said this was the direction I really wanted new Star Wars content to go. The rest – all of Disney’s live-action content, except for Andor, Rogue One, and the first two seasons of Mando, is average to bad in my opinion – I’m just hungry for some good, mature, epic Star Wars content. Give me an Andor-like show set in the Old Republic, with Jedi, Sith, and Nick Gillard as a stunt coordinator in lightsaber battles.
But… to be fair, I’ll say Skeleton Crew is good
It’s not offensive or poorly made; not blatantly cheap like the Boba Fett book; not pointless like Mando Season 3; not story-breaking like the sequels and Kenobi; not tone-deaf like Acolyte. Hello? It’s basically Star Wars goons, a neat little story about a bunch of kids having adventures in the Star Wars universe.
The writing so far (from episode 2) is decent: the effects, costumes, and locations look great: it all has a certain charm
I’m guessing that this, like Andorra, is a passion project for its creators and was a matter of higher-ups not bothering to get involved, which is a blessing at Lucasfilm these days. Good. 7.5/10..
